Interesting fact I learned from our amazing kitchen designer; when people choose to pay the extra for a custom colour on the cabinetry, over 75% of them choose some version of green.... This colour is Sherwin Williams Svelte Sage and looks aaaaamaaazing with the warm wood tones, white counters, and champagne bronze hardware.
These homeowners really weren't "being trendy" when they picked this colour. It was a long dream to have a green kitchen, so they certainly won't tire of this look when green is replaced by some other "trendy" colour.
When it's your kitchen, you do what you want! And so you should!

J U L I E I am the one who does our social media and I am one of the founders of Liliidae. My husband builds custom homes in the area and wanted to bring more selection to Melfort, with the idea of "everything under one roof" where you can pull everything together.
So I came at this venture without formal training, but I have helped with our construction company for years and have a lot of hands-on knowledge. Being born and growing up in Denmark gives me a different perspective on a lot of things which complements our collective design journey.

K A T L Y N N Right on the tidal-wave of Covid, while drowning in all the renos people were doing while stuck at home, Katlynn joined our team. She graduated with her Interior Design Technology diploma and could fill the holes where we didn't have the skills.
As a small business we quickly realized that we all wear many hats and have to be flexible with our roles, and Katlynn became our first-point-of-contact both on the phone and in the store.
She is good at helping people navigate all the choices, and has a good eye for what goes together and translates into a beautiful home. She keeps the showroom updated and knows a incredible amount of information on all the different materials we offer.

Another black kitchen -one we didn't design! I am really digging back into the archives these days LOL.... We came in to this project to finish the upstairs and bedrooms, select furniture and decor, with the goal of warming up the spaces. The open concept, tall ceilings, concrete floors, and tiles surfaces, all translated a little un-welcoming even though it was all beautiful. The challenge is always finding the right balance between hard surface materials and soft materials. These homeowners are very trendy and have great taste, so working with them was both easy and fun!

If you have orange toned oak cabinets, you want to update, but don't want to change them..... Save this great flatlay as inspiration; you'll want to pick flooring that has a wee bit of warm tones mixed into either a grey or brown undertone. White countertops and a white tiled backsplash brightens everything up, and adding something black gives you a great contrasting element that lends a more modern feel to the granny look. This could be painting a section of cabinets, maybe the island, or getting black stainless steel appliances. We like using brushed nickel hardware on oak cabinets because it's cooler and doesn't compete with the door itself. And there you go!

The shiplap will probably be time-stamped as the "Joanna Gaines Era" but we feel okay with that. The shiplap really suits this home, the way of living here on the prairies, and does feel as if it could have been original to the home.... The vinyl floors are a great choice for an entrance where snow and mud unavoidably will make an appearance.

If you are lucky enough to get to redo your kitchen, what colour of cabinets would you do? A mix of colour and wood / all colour / all wood / all white? We definitely do a lot of white (or a version of white) kitchens, so this was a fun diversion! The all black cabinets look so sharp! There are plenty of white surfaces in here and big windows letting in the natural light, making this room feel feel bright and open.

Why we do these; it's a good way for us to use different materials and arrange them in a neat fashion. Sometimes we do them very full or colourful, other times very bare and minimal. It is a good brain break for us when we've sat by a computer all day or done lots of math -it gets us walking around the showroom and look at things with a different set of eyes.

Another look at this kitchen, newly renovated, and I want to show you some of the key features ANY kitchen should have!
✔Good corner solutions; here you see the "Super Susan" that gives a good place for things like your slow cooker, rice cooker, or bags of sugar and boxes of cereal.
✔Garbage/recycling drawers. You may wonder if this is the best use of a cabinet and we think YES! The reason is that you have to have a garbage in the kitchen somewhere; if not hidden away in a cabinet it'll have to sit on the floor somewhere... The more things you have sitting around, the more cluttery and small your kitchen will feel.
✔Pull-out drawers; if you have the space for this you definitely should add this! It doesn't take much cabinetry of this kind to fully replace a walk-in pantry! The drawers are incredibly handy, you can get to everything, nothing gets lost, you can move drawers up or down to fit the space to be EXACTLY what you need!

Christmas Eve is when the Danish people celebrate Christmas and that's a tradition I have kept and will always keep. Everything else about the holidays is Canadian at our house except for a few additions of party games and food served.
We eat turkey on Christmas Eve and have cold turkey sandwiches on the 25th at lunch.
I decorate my table for Christmas Eve but clear it off before the 25th so there's room for Lego building!

So close y'all! If you missed our post the other day I'll tell you our Christmas Hours here: today Tuesday we're open 9-1 and then closed for the ENTIRE holiday season, reopening again Tuesday January 6th.
Why are we not open during Christmas and New Years? Because we need the break. We have children home and want to spend time with them. We work hard throughout the year and it's not easy to take proper breaks without mulling over a job, an unhappy client, a problem that arose during some renovation, or doing favours for people because we like you all so much!!! We need the break, so that's why.

Coming up with tile inspiration can be challenging. Mixing patterns and sizes are a great way to avoid your room looking boring and harsh. Our suggestion for mixing your tiles:
1. Pick a larger tile on the walls
2. Pick a medium sized tile for the floor that is a different shape than your walls
3. Pick a small tile for your shower floor (this also helps sloping towards your drain)
4. Be aware that your installer may not like this, but you can be confident it will look GREAT afterwards! Especially if you hired Liliidae to create your room for you 😉

We are very curious to find out, as the homeowner moves back into this part of the house, if the functionality is actually better. The cabinetry that have pantry drawers with storage galore are also an amazing feature, if your kitchen is large enough to accommodate.
Really, just storage is amazing. So many kitchens lack good storage and we find that's one of the top priorities when people upgrade their cabinetry.

I got around to decorating my own house! I really liked the current set-up of my books and frames. So I just added things around and on what was there. They're pretty simple this time around, but I like them.

T A B L E S E T T I N G S throughout the years. Which one do you like? I am more drawn to the fuller ones, but the less-is-more approach is for sure the most realistic version of my table setting! LOL!
I remember my own parents spending an entire Saturday getting the house, the meal, and the table ready for guests. With my own four children and then more foster children, I just never cared to go all out. Now that the kids are getting older and we only have our own, I find my desire to dress it up is growing. Following through will happen one day....

What I really like about the recent home trend -and Christmas trend- is that it's all about becoming more personal and intentional. Get crafty and make your own garlands. Use your grandmothers handed down things. Dress up your table with doilies and your tree with tinsel. Anything goes pretty well!

// Before + After // This was a tight-budget facelift of a lawyer's office where the goal was to get rid of the 90'ies look while not changing neither the layout nor the flooring that runs throughout the building. To get the modern look, yet keeping it classy as you'd expect in a lawyer's office, we painted the ceiling, made a faux fireplace with stacked bricks, adding trim to the doors and walls to add some interest to the space, and cladding all the desks in a dark wood. There was no budget for extras, so we used paint to transform as many things as we could -even down to the blinds!
Why a faux fireplace? There was no budget for a real one, but we needed some kind of feature/focal point as you cone through the doors. The artwork all belonged to the owner already, but I did manage to squeeze in a bit of personalized artwork by using the scrap paper in the bottom of the drawer where all the legal stamps were kept. We love adding personal touches!
