// Before + After // Shiplap Farmhouse

Mudrooms and Entryways are rooms that have to work hard. Our client came to us with a mudroom/entryway that had been added to their home by transforming the garage into the current space. It was time for an update. One of the key principles of design that we incorporate into any of our projects is function + beauty. This is exactly how this Mudroom/Entryway turned out. Everything about an Entryway/Mudroom needs to be functional. There usually isn’t the luxury of adding beautiful decor just for no reason (except when you bring fresh florals in to the house in a pretty basket!) because space is typically limited. Functioning pieces need to be the beautiful decor.

It was such a treat working with this client. She was looking for a farmhouse feel with lots of storage and function. And I think we accomplished just that…

The main detail that the homeowner wanted to incorporate into their updated entryway/mudroom was shiplap. Think all the Joanna Gaines inspiration that you can! We decided to shiplap every wall and the end result was amazing. The drop ceiling was replaced with pot lights (changing lighting from fluorescent to LED makes such a huge difference!) and shiplap was added to flow with the rest of the entryway.

I love adding extra detailing to walls. It’s always amazing to me how a little bit of extra trim work can completely change the feel and look of a room. This home is situated on a farm, so the shiplap fit in perfectly.

Our client wanted the entryway to have a feature colour in it as opposed to being all one colour. So in order to break up the white in the entryway and create an added feature, we incorporated a bright navy blue. It accents the white and wood tones and works perfectly for this space.

We were able to pull the blue accent colour into both sections of the entryway. The beautiful part of how this was previously set up is that there was a distinct section for coming into the home and placing your things at the doorway. Then there is another portion of the room devoted to organization and tons of storage. We ended up replacing the old cabinets with new cabinets and a quartz countertop. Plus added in open shelving in the same material used to build the bench.

We incorporated two tall pantry cabinets on either side of the cabinet bank to accomodate specific needs. By adding the tall cabinet, we were able to create ample storage for cleaning supplies, while the other holds pull-out drawers for extra storage. Changing the layout from all uppers to adding the floating shelves in-between the tall cabinets keeps the space from feeling too heavy or overwhelmed by the large cabinets and gives the space some ‘breathing’ room.

Another change that added to this space was replacing the unused door with a large window. The natural light that shines in is just perfect.

One part of the design that needed to be changed on the fly was the fireplace. The plan was to sink it into the wall so that it would be flush. Once the demo began, it was quickly clear that the wall the fireplace was supposed to be sunk into was a load bearing wall, which meant we could not cut into it. We needed to come up with a new plan quickly, and I love how it turned out! We built out around the fireplace in a contemporary design which really elevates the design of the room, yet still feels like it fits with the rest of the design. Going with an electric fireplace meant that we didn’t have to worry about the venting required for gas fireplaces and it still provides ample heat for the space. And it’s a lot prettier than the wall heating unit that was previously there.

The flooring throughout is our VCC Evoke flooring. We went with this flooring option because of it’s durability and it’s ability to be used in wet spaces. The colours and pattern of the floor fit in perfectly with the feel and flow of the room.

Overall this was such a fun project to work on. Loved being able to come up with beautiful solutions that will be extremely functional. Our clients really are the best.
